This course provides development of Academic Spanish proficiency for any student who wishes to successfully utilize Academic Spanish in a dual language setting or similar environments. Students will refine their language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to become successful dual language teachers. This course is designed to equip the pre-service bilingual and second language teachers with the historical, sociolinguistic principles and legal foundations of bilingual education. We will examine different models of bilingual programs and its socio-cultural implications for language minority students. This course will emphasize how the political arena has influenced bilingual legislation in the United States.

In addition, this course will focus on the development of successful asssessment and advocacy practices as well as how to address assessment inequities in Bilingual and ESL classrooms.

This course is designed to help educational practitioners to understand the inter-relatedness of language and literacy learning in the classroom of Non-English speakers. This course will examine the cultural contexts, social, and linguistic approaches to the teaching ESL. The importance of the teacher-student relationships and classroom climate will be emphasized. This course focuses on examining principal theories that address the linguistic and cultural needs of a diverse population. Included in this course will be the exploration of diversity issues, refinement of classroom management and planning techniques, teaching strategies and informal and formal assessment practices for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Students will exhibit an understanding of the Texas teacher competencies as outlined in the Pedagogy and Professional portion of the TExES exam.

Biliteracy for Dual Language Educators provides development of Academic Spanish proficiency for students who wish to successfully utilize Academic Spanish in a bilingual or dual language setting. Students will continue refining their language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to become successful dual language teachers. This course is intended to support academic student success in Spanish grammar and writing to develop bilingual/dual language pedagogy. SPAN 2311, SPAN 2312, EDBL 3307. This course will provide bilingual teacher candidates with foundations on theories and approaches to teaching biliteracy for emergent bilinguals with an emphasis in the teaching of Reading and Spanish Language Arts. Course is offered in Spanish. Course is designated as Service and Experiential Learning.

This course is for students in the Bilingual EC-6 and 4-8 degree plan. The course will include knowledge of teaching Mathematics, and Science in the dual-language classroom. It will consist of a 3hr. course credit, lesson plan demonstrations, and TEKS alignment to each content area. Course is offered in Spanish.

This course equips preservice biligual teachers with the necessary knowledge/skills to teach and assess social studies in the early childhood through elementary grade levels. Students will learn methods for selecting appropriate social studies programs; the order for teaching content within social studies curriculum; how to create authentic assessments for social studies; and how to modify and adapt social studies programs to meet the needs of CLD students.

This course is designed to teach methods and approaches for teaching science in the bilingual and dual language classroom. The identification of best practice and effective pedagogical instruction in science inquiry for emerging bilinguals and English Learners will be explored. The instructional materials, resources, and linguistic accommodations will provide the opportunity for meaningful exploration of basic science concepts and science processes in the bilingual and dual language classroom. Assessment of these scientific practices and processes for learning and classroom implementation will be explored.

The course will provide bilingual teacher candidates with the methodology needed in biliteracy reading comprehension, writing structures, and strategies in content areas. The bilingual teacher will design instruction and evaluate the biliteracy trajectories for emerging bilinguals. Students will apply knowledge of a biliteracy framework methodology to address language and content standards in the elementary bilingual and dual language classrooms. This course is taught in Spanish and English.
