Student Transitions

New Student Orientation

The Student Engagement Office provides students with information to assist in a successful transition to Texas A&M University-San Antonio. At orientation students will receive information on academic expectations, university policies, campus resources, and involvement opportunities from various departments around campus. Returning students whose orientation completion date is over a year old will be required to complete orientation. Orientation must be completed prior to registering for classes.

  • First-Year New Student Orientation:
    • NSO is for students who have not attended college since earning a high school degree or GED.
    • Step 1: NSO
      • NSO is a one-day orientation. Students will select their orientation date via JagWire. Dates for Summer and Fall admits will open February 1 and dates for Spring admits will open September 1.
      • A nonrefundable $150 orientation fee will automatically be added to the student account for orientation.
      • No refunds will be issued for students who do not enroll at A&M-San Antonio.
    • Step 2: JagX

      • This program jump-starts a student’s transition to college and prepares our new Jaguars for the life-changing experiences that lie ahead by introducing university expectations and culture through an emphasis on the professional, intellectual, and life skills that will enable participants to be successful as university students.

      • This experience, held prior to the first day of class, will allow our students to meet fellow jaguars, interact with faculty and staff, and feel a connection to our university.

      • JagX is mandatory for all, incoming first-year students. Failure to attend JagX will result in a class registration hold on the student’s account.

Students who are over the age of 30 by the first day of classes, in the semester they are applying for, are exempt from freshman orientation requirements but must complete transfer orientation requirements. If you meet this stipulation and would like to follow the transfer orientation requirements, please call Student Engagement at 210-784-1452 or email nso@tamusa.edu.

  • Transfer and First-Year Transfer Orientation:
    • Orientation is for students who have:
      • earned college credit hours, determined at the point of admission, and attended college since earning a high school degree or GED, or
      • attended college since earning a high school degree or GED and have 29 or fewer college credit hours.
    • Step 1: Online Orientation
      • Orientation will be completed online. Students will register for online orientation via JagWire. Orientation for Summer and Fall admits will open February 1 and dates for Spring admits will open September 1.
      • A nonrefundable $75 orientation fee will automatically be added to the student account for orientation.
      • No refunds will be issued for students who do not enroll at A&M-San Antonio.
    • Step 2: Jaguar Transfer Assembly
      • Each university college has their own assembly where incoming students can attend an information fair, sessions, and faculty panels to further connect with their new academic home.
      • This event also provides incoming students to meet current student leaders, faculty, and staff that will help them transition onto the campus successfully.
